About Lambda Kappa

How the Sho-Nuff Players got their start and where they are headed in the future.

The Origin

In the late 70’s early 80’s, there were 3 Black Fraternities (AΦA, ΩΨΦ and ΦBΣ) and 2 Black sororities (AKA and ΔΣΘ) already established on the campus of Southern Arkansas University (Magnolia, AR). At that time, the rules stated that any new chapters of a fraternity or sorority requesting to be established, required a vote from the panel of the Black Greek Letter organizations.

Prior to 1981, a group of Kappa men: Brother Charles Peters (Texarkana Alumni Chapter, Fall 1977), Brother Aundre Piggee (Gamma Sigma, Spring 1979), Brother James E. Dishroom (Gamma Sigma by way of the Theta Alpha Chapter, Spring 1973, along with the help of the Texarkana Alumni Chapter and Gamma Sigma Chapter; began the process of chartering a new chapter of KAΨ on the campus of SAU.

Initiate Selection

During the Spring of 1981, the selection process began for the first initiates of KAΨ at SAU. Because there were no brothers on campus, the selection process was untraditional to say the least. To find prospects, Brother Peters was in contact with Artie Pierce (Black Lady) from Lewisville, AR. She would share information with Brother Peters about the potential prospects who were interested in becoming members. These prospects led to the selection of 15 young men for initiation. These young men would go on to be known as “15 tons of Kold”.

These young men would go on to be known as “15 tons of Kold”.

Member Initiation

This group of initiates would not have an officially designated Dean of Pledgees. Instead, the Texarkana Alumni Chapter was given the title of governing Chapter and Dean of Pledges. Brother Piggee, Peters and Brother Dishroom would take on the day-to-day responsibilities and play a prominent role in pledging the Spring 1981 initiates.

Brother Piggee would drive back and forth between Magnolia and Pine Bluff to assist in the pledge process, while Brother Peters and Brother Dishroom lived locally. Members of the Texarkana Alumni and Tyler Texas Alumni chapters would visit on occasion as well.

Establishing A Legacy

Since a charter had not been established yet, the Spring 1981 initiates were listed under the Gamma Sigma Chapter, located at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. This was the designated undergraduate Chapter for that area at the time. The next year would see another group of initiates (Spring 1982) named “4 Frosty Knights of Koldness”. Their Dean of Pledges would be Brother Darren Foreman aka “Most Kold” from Spring 1981. This group of initiates would also be listed under Gamma for the same reasoning.

During those first two years, Brother Peters, Brother Piggee and Brother Dishroom would present a plan to the SAU panel of Black Greek Letter Organizations to establish the charter. Upon presenting this plan, the AΦA and ΦBΣ Fraternities voted against KAΨ brothers being added multiple times. It took a lady of ΔΣΘ (Dr. Kathleen Mallory) to stand up and speak on behalf of the brothers. She spoke eloquently and was able to convince the other Greeks to vote in favor of adding KAΨ.
